Continuing on my series on visiting Washington DC (Click here to read 1, 2 & 3) next stop would be the Washington Monument. The Monument is the center point of the National Mall. Walking along the reflection pool towards the Washington monument you would find the Korean War memorial on the right & the Vietnam memorial on the left.

At the eastern end of the reflection pool is the newly construction World War 2 Memorial dedicated to all the soldiers who served the nation during the that period, roughly 16 million. The memorial consists of 56 pillars, arranged in a semicircle around a central plaza with two arches on opposite sides. Each pillar is inscribed with the names of the then-48 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the Alaska Territory and Territory of Hawaii, the Commonwealth of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Due to the association of WWII Servicemen with the phrase “Kilroy was Here“, the memorial includes an engraving typical of the Kilroy graffiti.

Design trivia:

• The southern end of the memorial dedicated to the Pacific theater.
• The northern end of the memorial, dedicated to the Atlantic theater.

Next you would see the world’s tallest masonry structure, The united states Presidential memorial for George Washington referred as “The Washington Monument” . Among the Founding Fathers of the United States, George Washington earned the title “Father of the Country” in recognition of his leadership in the cause of American Independence. After the recent landscaping enhancement project and the interior renovation work the elevators have been opened for tourists to get a birds eye view of Washington DC from the top at 555 feet.
