Visiting Washington DC - a Brief Intro

March 11th, 2007 by Anand

With the weather out in the Nation’s Capital almost like Spring and the Annual Cherry Blossom festival in couple of weeks (first week of April), I felt that this would be the appropriate time to write a DC travel guide for the first time visitor. The peak season for tourist is from April (the Cherry Blossom Festival) till September (Labor Day weekend).

So what should one expect to see in DC? Is it just a place full of museums and monuments? I would say “Yes“, DC is full of monuments & museums and “No“, it has much more to see apart from the M & M’s and the Politicians.

So let’s start, Washington DC (we locals who dwell & toil refer it by DC or the The District) is a very small town/district smaller than the state of Rhode Island (now don’t ask me where is Rhode Island, you better get a US map first) surrounded by Virginia & Maryland and almost the shape of a square.

I would say DC is

  • 1/5 occupied by federal agencies
  • 1/5 by museums & monuments
  • 1/5 by DC agencies & business
  • 1/5 by various streets named from A to Z, 1 to XX & after all the states that you could spot on the US map and
  • 1/5 by dwellers like me who have their vehicle number plate’s proudly saying “taxation without representation”. Yes, we have no voting representation in Congress. Our voice can only be heard till the mayor’s office bcos we are a Municipal government.

Hang-in their. Whats coming up in the next post. Important landmarks to visit the first time.
